On the occasion of the 12th ICME, the Spanish Committee of Mathematics Educationdecided to prepare a national presentation entitled Spanish Cultural Heritage.The presentation takes the form of a series of posters, each of which has a specialfocus, showing relevant historical events identified according to time and institu-tions. As a whole, the posters outline a comprehensive historical trajectory devotedto the Hispanic Heritage.The relevance of mathematics in the relations between Spain and America hasremained unbroken since its beginning 520 years ago. Julio Rey Pastor emphasizesthe importance and scope of this heritage for its scientific and technological use andits benefits since the discovery of America. Since then, throughout 520 years ofcontinuous cultural cooperation, the mathematical background shared by Spain andthe American Republics, people and countries, that have remained solid andpermanent.To present the Spanish Heritage in the ICME 12 of Seoul (Korea), from theEducation Commission of the CEMAT (Spanish Mathematics Committee) havebeen prepared 27 posters, which set out key moments, characters and events in thehistory of mathematics.

]]>This book explains a result called the Modularity Theorem:All rational elliptic curves arise from modular forms.Taniyama first suggested in the 1950’s that a statement along these lines mightbe true, and a precise conjecture was formulated by Shimura. A paper of Weil[Wei67] provides strong theoretical evidence for the conjecture. The theoremwas proved for a large class of elliptic curves by Wiles [Wil95] with a keyingredient supplied by joint work with Taylor [TW95], completing the proofof Fermat’s Last Theorem after some 350 years. The Modularity Theoremwas proved completely by Breuil, Conrad, Taylor, and the first author of thisbook [BCDT01]. Different forms of it are stated here in Chapters 2, 6, 7, 8,and 9.To describe the theorem very simply for now, first consider a situationfrom elementary number theory. Chap-ter 2 shows that modular curves can be made into compact Riemann surfacesas well. It ends with the book’s first statement of the Modularity Theorem,relating elliptic curves and modular curves as Riemann surfaces:If the com-plex numberj= 1728g32/(g32−27g23)is rational then the elliptic curve is theholomorphic image of a modular curve. This is notatedX0(N)−→E.Much of what follows over the next six chapters is carried out with an eyeto going from this complex analytic version of Modularity to the arithmeticversion (0.1). Thus this book’s aim is not to prove Modularity but to state itsdifferent versions, showing some of the relations among them and how theyconnect to different areas of mathematics.Modular forms make up finite-dimensional vector spaces. To compute theirdimensions Chapter 3 further studies modular curves as Riemann surfaces.Two complementary types of modular forms areEisenstein seriesandcuspforms. Chapter 4 discusses Eisenstein series and computes their Fourier ex-pansions. In the process it introduces ideas that will be used later in the book,especially the idea of anL-function,L(s)=∞∑n=1anns.

Modularcurves, Jacobians, and Abelian varieties are similarly associated to solutionsets of systems of polynomial equations overQ, algebraic objects in contrastto the earlier complex analytic ones. The formulations of Modularity alreadyin play rephrase algebraically to statements about objects and maps definedby polynomials overQ,X0(N)alg−→E,J0(N)alg−→E, Af,alg−→E.We discuss only the first of these in detail sinceX0(N)algis a curve whileJ0(N)algandAf,algare higher-dimensional objects beyond the scope of thisbook. These algebraic versions of Modularity have applications to numbertheory, for example constructing rational points on elliptic curves using pointscalled Heegner points on modular curves.Chapter 8 develops theEichler–Shimura relation, describing the HeckeoperatorTpin characteristicp. Such representations are asso-ciated to elliptic curves and to modular forms, incorporating the ideas fromChapters 6 through 8 into a framework with rich additional algebraic struc-ture. The book ends by discussingtwo broader conjectures that Galois representations arise from modular forms.Many good books on modular forms already exist, but they can be daunt-ing for a beginner. Although some of the difficulty lies in the material itself,the authors believe that a more expansive narrative with exercises will helpstudents into the subject. We also believe that algebraic aspects of modu-lar forms, necessary to understand their role in number theory, can be madeaccessible to students without previous background in algebraic number the-ory and algebraic geometry. In the last four chapters we have tried to do soby introducing elements of these subjects as necessary but not letting themtake over the text. We gratefully acknowledge our debt to the other books,especially to Shimura [Shi73].The minimal prerequisites are undergraduate semester courses in linear al-gebra, modern algebra, real analysis, complex analysis, and elementary num-ber theory. Topics such as holomorphic and meromorphic functions, congru-ences, Euler’s totient function, the Chinese Remainder Theorem, basics ofgeneral point set topology, and the structure theorem for modules over aprincipal ideal domain are used freely from the beginning, and the SpectralTheorem of linear algebra is cited in Chapter 5. ]]>Topology is an important and interesting area of mathematics, the study of whichwill not only introduce you to new concepts and theorems but also put into contextold ones like continuous functions.However, to say just this is to understatethe significance of topology. It is so fundamental that its influence is evident inalmost every other branch of mathematics.This makes the study of topologyrelevant to all who aspire to be mathematicians whether their first love is (orwill be) algebra, analysis, category theory, chaos, continuum mechanics, dynamics,geometry, industrial mathematics, mathematical biology, mathematical economics,mathematical finance, mathematical modelling, mathematical physics, mathematicsof communication, number theory, numerical mathematics, operations research orstatistics. (The substantial bibliography at the end of this book suffices to indicatethat topology does indeed have relevance to all these areas, and more.) Topologicalnotions like compactness,connectedness and denseness are as basic tomathematicians of today as sets and functions were to those of last century.Topology has several different branches — general topology (also known as point-set topology), algebraic topology, differential topology and topological algebra — thefirst, general topology, being the door to the study of the others. I aim in this bookto provide a thorough grounding in general topology. Anyone who conscientiouslystudies about the first ten chapters and solves at least half of the exercises willcertainly have such a grounding.For the reader who has not previously studied an axiomatic branch of mathematicssuch as abstract algebra, learning to write proofs will be a hurdle. To assist you tolearn how to write proofs, quite often in the early chapters, I include an aside whichdoes not form part of the proof but outlines the thought process which led to theproof.56CHAPTER 0. While this is a very clever software package, it is my strong viewthat, wherever possible, the statement of a result and its entire proof should appearon the same page – this makes it easier for the reader to keep in mind what facts areknown, what you are trying to prove, and what has been proved up to this point in aproof. So I do not hesitate to leave a blank half-page (or use subtleTEXtypesettingtricks) if the result will be that the statement of a result and its proof will then beon the one page.There are many exercises in this book. Only by working through a good numberof exercises will you master this course. I have not provided answers to the exercises,and I have no intention of doing so. It is my opinion that there are enough workedexamples and proofs within the text itself, that it is not necessary to provide answersto exercises – indeed it is probably undesirable to do so. ]]>Functional analysis plays an increasing role in the applied sciences as well as in mathematics itself. Consequently, it becomes more and more desirable to introduce the student to the field at an early stage of study. This book is intended to familiarize the reader with the basic concepts, principles and methods of functional analysis and its applications. Since a textbook should be written for the student, I have sought to bring basic parts of the field and related practical problems within the comfortable grasp of senior undergraduate students or beginning graduate students of mathematics and physics. I hope that graduate engineering students may also profit from the presentation. Prerequisites. The book is elementary. A background in under-graduate mathematics, in particular, linear algebra and ordinary cal-culus, is sufficient as a prerequisite. Measure theory is neither assumed nor discussed. No knowledge in topology is required; the few consider-ations involving compactness are self-contained. Complex analysis is not needed, except in one of the later sections (Sec. 7.5), which is optional, so that it can easily be omitted. Further help is given in Appendix 1, which contains simple material for review and reference. The book should therefore be accessible to a wide spectrum of students and may also facilitate the transition between linear algebra and advanced functional analysis. Courses. The book is suitable for a one-semester course meeting five hours per week or for a two-semester course meeting three hours per week. The book can also be utilized for shorter courses. In fact, chapters can be omitted without destroying the continuity or making the rest of the book a torso (for details see below). For instance: Chapters 1 to 4 or 5 makes a very short course. Chapters 1 to 4 and 7 is a course that includes spectral theory and other topics.
